Lee Goldie, chairman of the organising committee of the World Plumbing Conference (WPC) 2016, talks about the benefits the upcoming event will bring to the industry and why he hopes industry members will attend

South Africa will be proud to host the 2016 World Plumbing Conference (WPC 2016) in Cape Town later this year from 15-16 September, bringing together role players from all over the world to discuss our planet’s most precious resource – water. We chat to the chairman of the WP 2016 organising committee to see why he believes the industry should support this event.

Tell us about WPC 2016.
We came up with the idea that we were going to bring in a theme that resonates equally in Africa and the world. We decided on ‘Regulations for sustainability in plumbing – a case for international standards’.

Let’s talk about what we’ve done to make the conference more interactive. Can you break that down for us?
It was very important for us that we include the four major pillars of plumbing, i.e. energy, environment, health and water. And we decided to have those four pillars as they key elements of the conference, where we will discuss outcomes. And then we have breakdowns which reflect the dynamics of sustainable plumbing and standards within each of those pillars.

What are the outcomes you mentioned?
I believe that a combined approach will allow us to develop the ultimate interactive status between modern plumbing and rural plumbing. Quality of life, health and safety – all these elements can be brought into the discussion, and the outcomes can be shared equally among the countries that can use them.

The World Plumbing Council’s approach is a global approach, and the ‘global approach’ means bringing all the countries together in one place at one time. We want like-minded professionals to share and combine their resources and knowledge and experience. We want to bring together challenge-driven people who have a sense of brotherhood and who love being in an environment that creates a firm platform for outcomes.

The other activities at WPC 2016 – like the skills demonstration and the Community Plumbing Challenge – have been opened up to day visitors. Do you see that as an advantage?
I think it’s critical. The conference is never limited to just plumbing professionals or retailers or the like. This encourages the community, designers, and other professionals, who are challenge-driven by what is happening on the ground to attend. The Community Plumbing Challenge is one of those amazing initiatives that has been put together, and we will have the opportunity to show that at the conference. We so much look forward to students and the like understanding how and what we do, the relevance of plumbing in today’s modern world, and how much importance we should be placing on it.

Why did the committee pick Cape Town?
Cape Town, and I’m speaking as a Capetonian, has that wonderful diversity; the variety of its cultures and communities, and the challenges the city faces, are a blending of old and new. It’s young and vibrant and, with the backdrop of Table Mountain, the sea, and various aspects of entertainment – I don’t think anyone is going to leave Cape Town wanting.
